  1. I did trade. Here is my 2000 328ci in Topasblau which I picked up recently. (5-speed, 135K on the odom.)
  2. Earl: A few years ago, I took care of a retired RN who'd been an Army nurse during the WWII years. She said that Alexandria was busting at the seams with all the troops and support people. She worked at Ft. Polk; said that the town was hopping on weekends! It was nearly impossible to find an apartment back then. Nice lady.
  3. Roundel is elitist. Lots of racing, concours events, a heavy focus on the latest ($$$) models, pricey motor tours, O'fe$t. It needs more Hack Mechanic, more barnfinds (example: Wegweiser's F*Bomb), more tech talk, more grassroots members having a blast, more restorations, more long-time original owner stories. Basically: more FUN. (less time with Thurston Howell III)
  4. Alex: I lived in Alexandria from early '68 through late '72 because of my dad's job with P&G in Pineville. I've been back to Alexandria a few times since then. I remember Leesville as very tiny. (have you seen Bunkie, though??) My recollections of Alexandria/Rapides Parish won't help you much here... I remember when the USAF base was still operational in Alexandria. (England AFB) Enjoy the southern cousine.
  5. As to keeping Don employed and supporting 3M's stock price: we use a million 3M products at Kettering Medical Center where I work. We can all do our part.
  6. Ray: I had been spending more money on the E30 trying to sort it out. It works great now, as long as you don't expect a/c. I've also spent a lot more time driving the 325. My '02 was sitting too much. Ten years is a decent time to own an '02. I am transitioning into something.... not sure what it is yet. I'll look at any BMW that catches my eye. If you know of a 318ti with the Sport or the Active pkg. that would be of interest.
  7. Very glad that you are OK, Kevin. I have never hit anything bigger than a squirrel. I hope that streak continues. Best of luck setting everything straight!
  8. Note to Simon: Euro bumpers Euro bumpers Euro bumpers Euro bumpers (subliminal trickery)
  9. I have yet to drive a well-cared for specimen. Eager to see if I "need" one or not. I am in the Dayton, OH area. I may consider an auto to 5-speed swap if the price is right. Show me what you've got. THANKS. Year: 1995-1998 Make: BMW Model: 318ti
  10. Bill Williams: If money were no object, I'd have gone for the show-quality look of yours. (But you earned that look, that feel with hard work, so well done.) Well, I definitely got a lot in regards to fun, reliability and safety over the years. I'll be around; thanks, Bill. Simon: Ooops, I did sound gushy. You're already having fun. Das ist gut.
  11. Hey Simon!! I am very glad that you popped up on the FAQ. I didn't want to twist your arm too much, but you'd miss out if you did not get on the FAQ. I did not think that I should introduce you unless you were ready to make an appearance on your own. Yeah, this is great! I won't lose track of you or my (former) '02 - nice! Simon, you were straight with me -- kudos to you as well. You have my blessing if you put on humongous tires or a hotter cam, or whatever. HE is yours now! You must be safe. you must have fun. Those are your orders!
  12. Aaron: Right back at you. Too bad we don't live closer together. I'll try to get to Ark. next April... Paul: Thanks for the kind words. It's been a lot of fun so far. I'll see what's in store for me next. Gatopescado: Thanks! You've got the right idea: barn-find, pasture-find... drive the beejeebers out of it on a tiny budget. FUN!
  13. As I watched mine put into a trailer for transport, the custodian aspect of '02 ownership was on my mind. Without the previous owners, my 10+ years of ownership and now the new owner's keen interest, VIN 2365006 would be kaput, extinct. I am glad to pass it along much better than I found it. Some cars (Vegas, Pintos, Cavaliers, Pacers, Azteks, Cimmarons, etc.) head straight to the scrapyard. The select, special ones call out to new owners, younger owners and to old buggers who just won't or can't let go. Such cars live on and on.
  14. Earl: I'll second that. It will be fun to ride shotgun at Eureka Springs. I did that in 2010 with Sam Adams. Mike: Decided that I am not a 'forever' owner. Kept my '02 2x as long as my father did. Karl: I will need to drive your tii again one day. Eager to see your former 1600-2 when Jake gets it completed. Gatopescado: I don't follow you. Explain....
  15. It's bittersweet. One day, I'll likely get another '02. So many possibilities.... Skip: you were one of the first to take pity on this newbie back in 2004 in Hermann, MO. I appreciate you, Bo, Keith, & so many others. Mary & I had a 2-car caravan to Hermann with Larry & Susan Wilson on that trip. Napes: we haven't met, but Dieter got a 'whole lotta love' during my stewardship. The new owner is showing the enthusiasm needed to take this '02 to the next level. He wanted a driver, not a wasted-away barn find. Dieter has off-road capability. Darn proud of that! Jim Gerock: Mary did not force the sale. No, she understood that I was restless for another old BMW. She has been supportive all the way. Marshall: I will allow the new owner to reveal himself. I have a feeling that he will pop up before too long. I was proud that Mike McCarthy's shop gave Dieter his due (when the buyer had detailed questions) -- while crediting me for wanting to sort out so many issues with this '02 and then DRIVING it, ENJOYING it. I keep plugging Mike's shop. I swear he doesn't pay me a dime.
  16. Going to a new home, a new owner after 10 & 1/2 years with me.
  17. My '02 is different, but I got a license bracket (used) from another squaretail owner. I don't know how eager the police are to hassle us about a missing front plate. I put one in place right away. Also, I am not sure what they do if there is no front (or rear) bumper in place...
  18. You may have temporary burnout or you may have a genuine need to sell. Usually it's the former & not the latter. We can't tell from here. Give it a little time.
  19. I have struck a deal. Dieter is going to a new owner on Tuesday, unless something goes horribly wrong. He is super-stoked. I like that very much.
  20. XAR: $7500 OBO. Thanks for your interest. P.S. I just got back from '02berfest with The 02 Group. I joined them for their drive yesterday along the VA/NC border. I had nothing but a very good time. (no troubles, no breakdowns - - the '02 was humming perfectly) BTW, I got 27 MPG on the return trip today.
  21. Sorry to be so slow. I was busy at work and then needed to retrieve my other car. Anyhow; Yes to a/c. It's a Behr unit. I've had it running but it loses the freon over a year's time. Not sure exactly what ails the a/c, but it's all there, intact. Total mileage on the chassis is 198K. I've gone about 17K since a total engine rebuild in 2010 completed by Mike McCarthy's shop. (Foreign Car Service in Huber Hts., OH) Mike McC can vouch for the quality parts and labor that went into this M10 and into the car overall, since he's the man who made Dieter one of the most reliable, smooth '02's around. The carpet is original. I won an Esty carpet set at MidAmerica '02Fest a few years ago. I opted instead for an Esty custom trunk mat and I LOVE it. There is some fade to the carpet, but no holes, no stains, no stank on the rug. Why am I selling?? It could be a passing thing, but I want to try other BMW's before I am an old geezer. I love my '87 325 and I've actually put more time and effort into it over the past couple years, sorry to say. I had a blast driving Dieter last weekend on the rollercoaster roads of rural N. KY with Jason and the RGB guys. They are great -- I am not leaving them or the FAQ. I may buy another '02 one day. I was tempted to buy Karl's Sahara 1600-2 which is now in the bodyshop, about to make Jake Metz's day and or year when it rolls out -- shiny & new. Let's say this: my cost/benefit ratio on the '02 was sagging. Too much money for too little use. For a DD, the E30 is better for me. For vintage backroad fun, the '02 is great fun -- still. In slightly over 10 years, I have not put much more than 39K miles on it. Dieter has gotten tons of love in the form of parts/labor, however. This was an intact, non-rusty '02 that needed brakes, shocks, a clutch, a guibo, window seals, a shifter rebuild, brake pads, a valve adjustment & an exhaust manifold PDQ if I was going to hit the road with the real '02 guys. Safety and enjoyable driving came first, my friend. This car is ready for the next level. It needs the right person is all.
  22. Sam: Looking forward to seeing you as well! What will you be driving this time? I posted an ad in the BMWCCA.org site and on CL today. Overcoming inertia is not easy, but now I have it listed in several different venues.
  23. Safe and sound; that's great! I am heading to '02berfest on Friday with the '02Group. I'll need some good luck as well. The proud owner in 2003...
  24. The '02 is for sale, but it will give me a chance to try another model, another year; BMW that is. No definite plans yet. Mary has mentioned several times that she likes Mini Coopers. Her Taurus wagon (i.e. 'touring') may have to give way to her newfound interest in Mini Coopers.
