  1. It seems that all the activity for the RGB is on FB. I am split between several sites. Not a big complaint, just noticing it.
  2. I'd love to say Sahara, but that wouldn't be totally honest. I'd probably have to say Baikal. I have always wanted a blue car, but I settle for something else every time... My grandpa's blue Marquis which I briefly owned does NOT count.
  3. Hi Kevin: First of all, good luck. If anyone can fearlessly drive a 2002 all over creation no matter what happens, it's you. This will be devoid of the Death Valley hazard which you braved a few years back. Think of all the parts and wrenching you've showered on your '02 since then. The road had better watch out for your BMW, not the other way around. Jim
  4. I brought this '02 out of obscurity when I found it in Athens, AL in 2003. It was sold new in the Birmingham area and spent its life in AL until July, 2003. (which accounts for the lack of rust) During more than 10 years of ownership, I have driven this '02 to Hermann, MO, Eureka Springs, AR, Chicago, IL, Watkins Glen, NY, Shaker Village, KY, Winston-Salem, NC and on many drive/gtg's with my RGB and 02Group friends. Never has it left me stranded on one of these drives. This '02 is rock-solid reliable and is ready for the next owner to take it to the next level. The most important thing to know is that the engine was completely rebuilt in 2010, including 9.5:1 compression ratio, piano-top pistons, etc. The work was done by Mike McCarthy's shop in Huber Hts., OH. (Foreign Car Service) In fact, this '02 is so enjoyable mainly due to the repairs and upgrades completed by Mike and his mechanics. The car is a non-sunroof model. I have lots of data/receipts to share. Please contact me if interested. --- Jim Denker PH. (937) 479-9794 (VIN: 2365006) Year: 1975 Make: BMW Model: 2002 Body and Interior: Never wrecked. Repainted x1 by a p.o. in Sahara, the factory color. Very little rust. Front seats reupholstered using World Upholstery vinyl. Engine and Drivetrain: M10 totally rebuilt in 2010 by Mike McCarthy at Foreign Car Service in Huber Hts. OH. 4-speed manual with newer clutch and slave cylinder. Newer guibo. Suspension, Brakes: H&R springs, Bilstein HD's, Brakes have been completely redone during my ownership including new brake drums, one new front rotor, rebuilt calipers, new brake lines, new brake master cylinder.
  5. Have fun with the WRX, Nick. Don't let anybody razz you about being distracted from '02's. Enjoy.
  6. A few days ago, my 18-year-old daughter, Veronica, was gifted a 2001 Suzuki SUV by her Aunt Terri. It cleaned up quite readily and is ready for many more miles after a set of new front brakes, a new front axle and a couple CV boots. My 22-year-old son, Alec, needed another car when his '93 Camry accumulated the following deficits: a bad tranny, defunct a/c and totally busted-out suspension. (not to mention some ugly body damage) I purchased for him this 2001 Taurus wagon off of CL. It is the 3rd Taurus wagon we have bought. Veronica has jinxed the Taurus wagon vs. vintage BMW split we had going... The fleet of cars keeps growing here.
  7. I am 54. My '02 is 38 years old. My E30 is 26 years old. As of July 1st, 2013, I've owned Dieter for 10 years. He had spent the rest of his time in Alabama before moving to Ohio.
  8. We visited my wife's Aunt Aggie in Carmel a few years ago. I was lucky enough to catch 'car week' leading into the Pebble Beach Concours. It was great. We were just a few blocks from all the action. Plus, when I needed a car, I borrowed her pristine E39. I did all this on a budget, since we had a place to stay and only needed a rental car for a few days. I got to meet some of the Calif./West Coast '02 owners, which was a pleasure. Don't miss Legends of the Autobahn or the classic auto races at Laguna Seca.
  9. This has not been my year for vintage car events. I have been working, spending time with the kids and attempting to keep our four cars running. I called Sandy's towing 2x yesterday. Yikes! Never have I seen so much tranny fluid --- Alec's 'new' car barfed up bucketloads at Speedway yesterday! I am hoping that it's a component failure and not the entire tranny. Not a banner day for the Denker-McCartys. Wish me luck. Instead of travelling to all the major events, I will stay home and read Rob's book. But, I need to purchase it first..... Oh well, wait 'til next year.
  10. All great advice. ---- Also make some '02 friends: some one that can help you with a project, some one that you can bounce ideas off of, some one that you can begin '02-networking with, some one who will understand what you're going through. Definitely remember to keep it fun; don't stress too much. Go to '02 events/gtg's --- meet the people who post on the FAQ.
  11. Nick: I don't have but one space in my garage. (the '02 wins) My '87 325 gets parked outside. I wish that I could park it indoors, but it is my practical dd BMW. My only complaint is that the a/c has expired. I've had it worked on, but it fails pretty quickly, so I've given up on it. It is a very enjoyable car. Mine is the eta version. It is a 5-speed with a vinyl interior, but it's in good condition. I purchased 'Konrad' for $2500. I hope to buy a 2001 525i for my wife -- to replace her Taurus wagon. (touring?)
  12. c. Diesel has some of the most interesting posts on this site. He simply can't go away. Verboten!
  13. And nearly 10 years of ownership. That anniversary will hit on 7-3-13. And to think that my father only kept his '02 for about 4 years. He was mistaken.
  14. The one I used as my spare today is horribly bent. (I also found out that the spare tire is an ancient Michelin --- which immediately shredded.) I run 14in. Basketweaves in the summer and 14in. Bottlecaps in the winter. It doesn't matter too much which style of wheel. Needs to be nice and ROUND. Thanks in advance, guys.
  15. Hey Tom! It looks great! Did you respray the '02 yourself? Is it genuine Inka or is it Rustoleum rattle-can orange?? I've gotta know... Have fun with it!
  16. Congrats to you -- enjoy the early years. My firstborn is soon to turn 22. It's gone by so very quickly. Take pictures and enjoy the little things that he does; you'll never regret the time spent with your child.
  17. No Kohler fittings on my '02. - - - However, a previous owner had put on a trailer hitch which I removed. I did not realize it had any value, so it was scrapped. Also, a Kool Kat p.o. blacked out most of the trim. It took some time and effort to take it back to a factory look.
  18. Hey, I like dogs too. We have a Rat Terrier (Addie) and a Corgi-Jack Russell mix (Fat-Dog). They just don't ride in the car with me. When I think of a copilot, I think of my son, Alec, riding next to me in Dieter. He has always been such good company on any drive.
  19. I'd like to go this year, but college expen$e$ are upon u$. Also, we're about to buy Mary a new (used E39) DD. I won't be at Vintage due to the wedding of a good friend here in Dayton. RGB events will remain on my schedule, though. Have fun!
  20. It's Esty, Esty, Esty. Not so hard to spell. Include your email & perhaps she can reply....
  21. Weird. Do they feature paint overspray in the engine compartment and paint sprayed over rusty spare tire wells? Just wondering.
  22. c.d. I second what you said. I also liked the 5-series buyers guide and the Bavaria Touring story. Its unique restoration took place at The Werk Shop in Libertyville, IL. (Chicagoland) I toured the place a few years ago with fellow '02 owner Ben Younce. He had his '02 there for service at the time of the Windy City gtg. We saw a 503 in process and we also saw two mysterious Bavaria wagon-backed beaters on the lot. We were puzzled by those and promptly asked some questions. A small number of Bavs were converted by a small co. in the UK. We'd never seen one before.
  23. Congrats. Right behind you with a build date of 5-5-75 (2365006). I hope to pass through the desert and head north on the Pacific Coast Hwy in my '02 one day...
  24. Eager to see how it turns out, Aaron. Good luck with your project. (I have seen Aaron's car, but not in Derby...)
