  1. Just got home an hour ago. It was another great gtg in the Ozarks. Thanks to Bo, Barb, Skip, Blunt, Keith Krieger, Larry Wilson (& all others who helped round up the doorprizes) all the volunteer cooks, all the sponsors, etc. If I left anyone out, I am sorry. It's a long way to get there, but I sure had fun. Oh, and thanks again to Brian Spanel and his wife Cathy (or is it Kathy?) for hosting a bunch of us on Thurs. evening. Wonderful dinner and a great little '02 gtg enroute to Hermann, MO for an overnight stay there.
  2. Thanks to all of you once again. The memorial service was held on Saturday, April 21st. I gave one of the three eulogies. The service ended with a US Army Honor Guard ceremony, complete with the playing of taps and the presentation of a US flag to the widow. Very emotional. So many people were there and the kindness of those attending was greatly appreciated. (My dad served in Korea - US Army Corps of Engineers; earning a Bronze Star in the process.) BTW: Mike McCarthy (owner and top wrench at Foreign Car Service) drove to the service in his pristine '74 Malaga '02. Nice touch, Mike! Karl Hendrickson ('73 Malaga tii) was also in attendance on Saturday.
  3. For anyone in the vicinity: Memorial Services: Deerfield United Methodist Church 2757 W. US 22 & 3 Maineville, OH 45039 Date & time: April 21, 2012 @ 11 AM The '02 brotherhood/sisterhood is invited.
  4. I noticed that roundie too. I mentioned it here on the FAQ, but nobody responded. The movie was not my sort of thing. I like Charlize in movies where she's not a psych case. She is nice to look at.
  5. Paul: Enjoy the '02 adventure with your dad. He's gotta be A-OK since he's an '02 guy from way back. Keep the F Bomb away from the dummies in meandering SUV's and minivans, OK?
  6. Thanks for the wonderful, caring comments. You know I love you guys. Thanks for the 'nerd photo', Ben! I've been grieving -- I was too busy with work until today. I looked at photos, shared memories with friends, and I remembered to accentuate the positive. The '02 became a symbol to me of the good times with my father when I was a teen. Every time I drive Dieter, I am with my dad. That has been true since I rescued Dieter in northern Alabama back in '03. Dad loved to fish, especially largemouth bass in the lakes & swamps of Louisiana. Just before he passed, he was "fishing" from his chair in his family room. (i.e. doing all the motions of fishing) He was in another one of his happy places and it was good.
  7. Gordon R. Denker (1930 - 2012) My father died on April 11, 2012. He loved sports cars -- he's the one who taught me to drive in his beloved '72 Golf '02. A happy place for both of us was/is at the wheel of a 2002. Thinking of the good times and of the bond that remains.
  8. Seen briefly on the driveway of the home of Charlize Theron's onetime boyfriend who is married and no longer interested in her crazy self. Does anybody know who loaned their '02 for this shoot?
  9. Also have a set of original springs from my '75.
  10. Nice looking '02, Shenton. Where in Ohio did you find it? I don't think I know the seller, but I'm curious as to who/where.
  11. I purchased my '02 in Athens, AL. I hear that town got hit pretty hard. I send best wishes to the p.o. and everyone in the Athens/Huntsville, Al area.
  12. Mike: that may be true (or not). '75's are unfairly maligned as the worst year for the '02. I would beg to differ and quite a few others would likely join in. The dreaded thermal reactor (smog equipmt.) supposedly ruined the engines (too much heat), but other than anecdotes, I've not seen proof of this. After 35 years or so, floors get replaced, thermal reactors get thrown away, big bumpers get dumped in favor of chrome bumpers, engines get rebuilt, etc. I don't see how a '75 is inferior to a '76 or a '74. I have not experienced it certainly.
  13. Hi Mikey: Sahara rocks! Sorry to hear about all the bondo, but perhaps you have plans to fix that problem. Anyhow, you will enjoy the hell out of this car and you will learn a ton. Yes, there are a whole lot of friendly, knowledgeable people on the FAQ. Ask lots of Q's, but use the search function as well. A lot of typical Q's have been answered quite well and they're filed & waiting. Anyhow, have fun, make new friends, drive a legend - not an appliance. Cheers and good luck!
  14. Mike: That is a beautifully restored '02. It deserves to be owned and driven by a "true friend of Alex von Falkenhausen". Please don't settle for anything less. It has been said: buyer beware, but the seller must beware of dishonest people just as surely. Demand full payment in cash before you make any move toward turning over this beautiful 2002. (my 02 cents)
  15. So, mine was a very good buy at $3500. Mine presented like this in June of 2003. * * (Despite worn-out brakes & exhaust manifold that I dealt with pdq.) $5K seems quite high to me The owner should assure you that the engine is sound, the brakes are good, everything electrical works OK, it has no accidents in its history, etc. Any bondo? I'd want a discount for the failing transmission....
  16. '75's need love too. Not the most popular year of manufacture for the '02. So, we share a bond with these near-orphans. Great job and keep up the very good work!
  17. Great story -- worthy of an article in Roundel. Your daughter is unique and special (in the very best way!). Tell her not to compromise when it comes to cars and with MEN. She won't end up with a wienie driving a 'macho man' vehicle with an AUTO tranny. haha. Best wishes to you both. Keep bonding over the bimmers --the dividends will be huge.
  18. Or as Spock says: "Live long and prosper." Hope to see you soon too, Sam.
  19. ALL RIGHT, Sam! Give it some love and bring it to Vintage! Is it still 6V or did it get converted? Does it still have its original engine? Is it Granada or Verona? Good luck and have fun!
  20. Kris: I threw the dino turds away. I should have saved them to show off at Vintage or at one of our RGB gtg's. Feel free to drop in on us enroute to Vintage, OK?
  21. Another thumbs up for the product and for the seller. I bought a set of these based on Ben's recommendation. My original drain tubes were in place, but were absolutely useless. They'd turned into fossils -- black dino turds. (they weren't draining anything, so rust is the end result.)
  22. The Siennabraun '76 in The China Syndrome turned up for sale on EBay a few years ago. I did not save the details. It was in good, but not great shape as I recall. The car was well cast in the part of Jack Lemmon's car.
  23. 1. It takes me back to when I was a teen driving my dad's Golf '02. 2. Sensory: it feels good, it smells good, it looks good, it is good. 3. The right combination of fun and practicality. 4. There is no overkill. You simply get it or you don't. 5. What it says about the owner - volumes of good things.
  24. Don: I will search the weak/wimpy/watery section for you. Surely there is an emphatically lifeless beer waiting for you! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
