  1. Jim: bring some of it to Vintage. I'll swap some Little Kings Cream Ale with you. MMMMMM, beer is right!
  2. A clone of mine! Wonder how close the VIN's are to eachother? That would sell in minutes here in the MW....
  3. Mary has no interest in cars as anything but a means to get her where she wants to go. {She loves her '01 Taurus wagon. } Wisely, she enjoys seeing me happy and she encourages me to do what I call: bimmers on a budget. I did have to fight for my right to sell a BORING dd and purchase an inexpensive roundel'd dd. She assumed that I'd spend a lot more to get my dd, but there are plenty of interesting, cheap BMW's on CL. The engine rebuild last winter pissed her off when she saw the bill. I seriously owe her a trip to Europe now......
  4. Hi Matt. I have a '75 in the Dayton area, in fact, I live close to Mike. Send me an email & I'll add you to my database of OH/IN/KY '02 owners. That way, I can keep you posted regarding items for sale, our various gtg's, etc. Good luck with your '02. I've had mine since 2003 but I'll never be done sorting it out. EMAIL: j DOT denker AT sbcglobal DOT net
  5. I had a 1981 Rabbit S. Unfortunately it was assembled in the cursed PA VW plant which meant loads of misery for me and many other VW owners. I owned it from early '83 until the fall of '89. With much better quality control and better materials, that car would have been mighty special. It was always in the shop for something. It was never the engine, some other crapola. It ate fuel pumps for lunch -- not sure why? It also broke clutch cables repeatedly.
  6. My kids 'friended' me. I don't hover and they don't get upset w/me. If they want to keep a secret, they're clever enough to keep it off FB so as to keep me in the dark... I'll never know everything they're up to anyhow. They are teens, I am middle-aged; there is a gap just like when I was the teenager.
  7. I love Rube Goldberg devices... mostly because I am NOT the sort of person who could build them.
  8. great! I hope that the transition to the new normal goes very well.
  9. I can't recall the answer, but I've heard Mike Self answer this very question many, many times. I suggest a forum search of the postings by Doktor Self. (his FAQ handle is Mike) He's answered somebody else asking that question, I am sure. EDIT: I just re-checked. It is Testor's #1111 for the Bavarian blue.
  10. Brian: I am happy that Mary finally consented to dumping the Saturn and allowing me to pick up an E30 for my dd. That is a HUGE improvement. I can't force her to love a 5-series touring when she LOVES (!!) her 2001 Taurus SES wagon. {I bought it cheap off CL after her previous one got totalled in late June.}
  11. Congrats & good luck. My vote is for getting it back to its orig. look and feel. If it was originally Chamonix, that would be my first choice for a paintjob, but another early '02 color would be fitting. It may take some effort to find the early front grill and trim that you need, but it will be worth it.
  12. Nice touring! I wanted to buy one of those, but Mary wanted the much-cheaper Taurus wagon. Oh well.
  13. I'm thinking that 's the one on CL currently?? How many miles does it have on it? I'm no longer searching for one, but it would have gotten my attention a few weeks ago! I hope you scoop it up Ray.
  14. Good point, Esty. Why is it that the rudest remarks are the hardest to trace back to the brave ones who uttered them? Elementary.
  15. When does she get her first ride in your Chamonix roundie?? Teach her to drive a manual asap. Good luck!
  16. Larry: Maybe I could go on a field trip to Reggie's place with you one day. I've heard good things about his business.
  17. (1) Front license plate holder (black plastic) (2) Black plastic piece which covers the passenger seat hinge [the one on the outer (i.e. pass. door) side] (3) Plastic clips which hold the liner in place just behind the headlights (engine compartment). The clips push into place & look like stubby bolts. Never mind! I ordered the 1st two items from a BMW salvage yard in Sacramento. I was only missing one clip. I found one in the glovebox today -- problem solved.
  18. Sally was HOT in that movie. Why he let her go, I cannot figure out.
  19. GLWS of your '02. I have only seen one super-nice Golf Squaretail & it is nearby in Yellow Springs, OH. Mostly I see them beaten up pretty badly. I'm not sure why Golf cars take such abuse. Save this one, somebody; I LIKE Golf. (& it's not called monkey-vomit-green, either!!)
  20. This is not terribly constructive. I hardly know what we are talking about here. However, I promise to be polite to you and to everyone on the FAQ. Maybe everyone should take a solemn vow to be civil.....
  21. When it comes to cheap & rust-free, it's easier to find a squaretail that is cheap and (mostly) rust-free. You can find a roundie that is cheap, but probably not free of rust. Roundies command higher prices. There is nothing wrong with the '74-'76 cars except the massive bumpers. If you hate them enough, they can be swapped for the earlier style bumpers. As to removing the dreaded smog equipment, the FAQ search is your friend. So, yank that stuff out of there and get a tii exhaust manifold in place of the goofy one that was connected to the smog stuff. It's your personal preference when it comes to color, year, modifications, etc. Decide what you like best before you shop in earnest. Find an '02 buddy in your area to help you look some '02's over. See what you like and what you don't like & then buy one!
  22. Good point, Nick. The Friday local car cruise-in is going to need oxygen tanks and scooter chairs in a couple more years! Old-school hot-rods and muscle cars rule the lot, but I get excited over the oddball cars that show up. (Example: the 16-year-old with a very low miles '75 Pinto hatchback w/orig. putrid light green paint job & darker snot green interior. It was in excellent condition. I asked him: "What made you want to buy this car?" He said: "I needed a car and it was cheap and it was in really good shape." He was curious & learned a lot about Pintos and I certainly wished him good luck; a very good kid.)
  23. In the midwest, there are many more squaretails than roundies. The oldest '02's rusted away or got rear-ended, espec. with the smaller round tail lights. My dad's '72 Golf got rear-ended twice. The 2nd time totalled the car for keeps.
  24. I am not the greatest expert, but tii's are relatively rare. (only built in 72, 73, & 74) They generate more HP. (about 135) They are generally well preserved & they are usually in a more original state than your avg. carbed '02. They also have boxed trailing arms and better brakes.
  25. There is a '73 Turkis not far from here, BUT it was orig. SAHARA. --- And Karl's former car, a 1600-2 from Calif. -- sports a maizegelb paintjob which was orig. SAHARA.
