  1. Assume (correctly) that the brakes, shocks, hoses, belts, guibo, flex. brake lines, etc. are ancient. They may work, but they tend to be OLD. The clutch will likely be feeble, also your balljoints, tierod ends, & your shifter will have slop to it. Worry about basic operation and basic safety first. (headlights/taillights gotta work, engine's gotta run w/out overheating, it's gotta run w/out needing a battery charger each time, etc.) Check your windshield seal and rear window seal; probably rock hard and leaking, causing rust around the edges of the windows. Later make it a beauty and think of a hotter cam and a five-speed upgrade....
  2. The word spitup keeps coming to mind. Just shows that Italian designers and Bavarian engineers can be whack-o once in a while.
  3. In regard to meals & stuff while we are at Salt Fork. Fri. eve. is a free-for-all. There are lots of restaurants at the 178 exit off I-70 (Cambridge exit at route 209). Sat. am before the drive, I suggest you eat at the lodge w/in the park. Sat. lunch will be at Heini's Gourmet Mkt. in Sugarcreek, OH along the route we will be on. Sat. dinner will be at my cottage: hot dogs, brats, beer, salad, etc. Sun. am: we could dine at the lodge or down at exit 178 where there is a Cracker Barrel and many other EATS. Dang it, that Scott Sturdy fellow says he's too busy getting ready for Vintage at the Vineyard. The nerve!
  4. Our headcount of confirmed attendees is now up to 14. I still have 3 maybes on the list. That is a respectable number, but I envision at least 15 '02's in caravan on the 9th! May is gonna be great since many of us will also be going to Vintage later in the month. See you very soon!
  5. When you all check in at the main lodge at SFSP, we are getting a discount under the name of: "MW '02 BMW Group". I just messaged everyone today re. the GTG. If you have any questions, concerns, ideas, etc. let me know, please. I am certainly looking forward to it, having just finished the trivia questions for Sat. night's cookout. Study up for the trivia quiz, it's a toughie. Prizes will awarded to the top finishers. I typed up the Sat. route through Amish country today also. See you soon!
  6. Cabe, your car looks excellent. You should be proud. Michael Dubois is a super guy. I don't know what he said to you, but I doubt that he meant to harm. He runs a paint & body shop & from what I saw, it is a very impressive facility. Enjoy your '76 and perhaps you two can be pals. I'd recommend it -- that's my '02 cents.
  7. (1) You can pitch a tent here at my house. (Kettering is close to Beavercreek, Ohio.) (2) Bob Evans Restaurant 3409 Seajay Drive, Beavercreek, OH 45430 (@ Rt. 35 & N. Fairfield Rd. exit) (3) I favor leaving at 0800 hrs. -- that's not been nailed down yet.
  8. Bring the Monster & join us that Fri. am. We will be running a caravan to Vintage as we have the past several years. We meet at a Bob Evans Restaurant in Beavercreek near Mike Self's house. The B.E. Restaurant is just off State Route 35 which we take east into WV. You are very welcome to join us. Sounds as though we will have some visitors Thurs. night just before that when BLUNT & co. pull through our area & join up with us..... The more the merrier.
  9. Good luck, Dave. I hope to do a cross-country trip myself one day. I have lots of relatives in the Omaha area -- none have BMW's though. Give FAQ folks a heads up that you are passing through & you can have fun w/them. William (shipm8) & Jessie stopped in on many '02'ers when they went from Calif. to the Wash. DC area. They stopped in on us Dayton area folks -- another reason to gtg & celebrate. A blog w/lots of pix is a must for the FAQ.
  10. Eric, 1st of all, where are you? Take a trip to Calif. & buy a rust-free '76 & take it home w/you. They are a bargain to non-Calif. residents due to the state's smog laws which require '76 & later cars to be smogged each year. The '74 looks like it's hiding a bunch of nasty surprises. (they all do to a degree) That one does not sway me, it could be a bondo-bomb.
  11. Did any of you see this in the NYT? On their website you will see pictures of the Marquis deSoto which Steve Heller of Boiceville, NY built. He used a '98 Merc. Grand Marquis & body panels, bumpers, lights, etc. from an old de Soto to fashion this one-of-a-kind contest winner. Fascinating. What do you all think??
  12. Watched the Mecum auto auction on TV last night. Chevy's were highlighted, mainly 1955 - 1969 models. Lots of cool cars produced during that timeframe. Never wanted any Chevy after that period, though. Similar sweet spot for Pontiacs as well. Mainly due to the influence of John DeLorean when he was w/Pontiac.
  13. I will go next year; hated to miss it this year, as a matter of fact. If I throw the MW '02 GTG in the Fall next year, I will able to make it to Ark. Nice pix. BLUNT, you sure can drive long distances....
  14. Esty: I have 2 email addresses for Karl. I met him at Watkins Glen the year that BMW was the featured marque @ the Grand Prix Festival. Email me @: j dot denker at sbcglobal dot net.
  15. Sorry about that. You probably aren't eager to take it in to a shop. However, if you change your mind, try Foreign Car Svc. in the Huber Hts. section of greater Dayton. Mike McCarthy is your man there. I've had great luck w/mine since 2003, largely due to his efforts. (& a little luck)
  16. I do not have a caravan planned for Fri. You guys are welcome to cook one up. I will get there earlier than most to set some things up. It's coming on fast now.
  17. No offense, but only newbies say 20-oh-2. Show that you are part of the affliction and proudly say '02. When you say 2002, the dummies in the room think that you mean a BMW built for the 2002 model year.... Don't bother with that. Show us pix of your '02 then, OK?
  18. That one is a rusty Franken-bimmer. Not my kind of thing. Fly out to Calif. and drive a much better '76 back. I'd bet Michael would even help you to scout out some winners. He definitely knows his way around '02's, body work and the effects of the smog laws in Calif.
  19. Thanks. I did manage to talk to my non-'02-type friends at the party. We even got my dad to look over a few of the '02's. He had a '72 Golf in the 1970's. My dad & brother are both engineers, so they enjoyed talking with the technically-oriented (typical) '02 owners.... The Dieter rehab. fund went up by $63 as well that day!
  20. We had my '02, Mike Self's '69 Nevada, Ray Daley's '73 Turkis, Dene Berman's '75 Polaris, Karl Hendrickson's '73 Malaga, & Mike McCarthy's '74 Malaga. That's not to mention the 80-90 other folks who turned out for our backyard shindig. One friend even flew in from Calif. to be here. Anyhow, it was a great time!!
  21. I felt old the other morning. At work, a patient had an infomercial on the tube. It was Jack LaLane pushing his juicer machines for HEALTH!! He is in his 90's and looks like he could kick my ass and about 10 more for good measure. I remember seeing his TV show when I was barely out of diapers. I have gray hair and have slowed down, but not JACK!!
  22. Michael: we have had a subscription to VF for years. It's not perfect, but there are a lot of very interesting, intelligent articles in it. The fact that they will go into depth and allow lots of space to explore something appeals to us. I don't think it is overly aimed at women -- they do run some cheesecake photos of starlets -- which my wife gets annoyed with. ("They're so sexist!!" sayeth Mary)
  23. Road trip, road trip, road trip... I'll ride shotgun w/you to Fresno.
  24. Saturns did not catch on with young people as much as with an older, slightly nerdy crowd. Kind of like a mini-Volvo. Mary would occasionally borrow a co. car (Cavalier) which was so crappy, that my kids made fun of it. Though made by GM with similar dimensions, they were reviled by the staffers who used the Chevys on assignments. With cutbacks, the loaner pool of Cavaliers is gone now. BTW: the Saturn plant in Spring Hill was a very nice place when I toured it. I had toured the Norwood (OH) plant which produced Camaros and Firebirds in 1978. It was out of Dante's Inferno -- a nasty, noisy, dysfunctional plant. The UAW basically dared GM to close that plant; thinking that GM wouldn't be so bold as to tear down an obsolete facility with slackening demand. Yup, GM tore that place down -- no trace of it now!
  25. Very interesting read. However, they forgot to focus much on the cars & the people who built them. (not to mention why people bought them) I bought a new Saturn SL-1 in Feb. 1998 and it has been very reliable and economical to own. (a significantly better car than our previous '89 Corolla -- now on its 5th owner & >300K mi. itself) Our Saturn has just under 150K mi. of use and the only major repair was a clutch replacement. No rust anywhere! The stainless steel exhaust is wundebar & so is the timing chain. For you rust-belt folks: it makes a great winter-beater w/Blizzaks on it and plastic panels in the rust-prone areas. Today's cars are not beating it for fuel economy either. I have gotten 42 MPG from it on occasion. It has a much better crash safety rating than the old Corolla did. Also, it has dual airbags, while the Toyota had none. I am itching to sell it and get a used 3-series, but it works so well that I cannot convince my wife (or myself) that it's time to part with it yet. GM walked away from a rare success story. (Ford in its wisdom, let the Taurus die on the vine as well.)
