  1. Mike Self was at O'Fest with his wife, Carol. He drives a '73 Sahara with a Schrick cam, oversized pistons, lightened flywheel, and a 5-speed tranny. He could fly down the highway w/out any problems.
  2. I think of the cars that keep a person's memory alive: James Dean's Porsche Spyder, Steve McQueen's Bullitt Mustang or the rare Jaguar he raced down Mullholland Drive, or here in Dayton, a Packard which was once owned by Al Capone. (granted, the Dean death car was totalled) When Adam West is long gone, the Batmobile will keep him alive in our pop culture memory. How about the cars redone by Chip Foose? They will live on long after he has passed, but wouldn't he be pleased? Councours shows highlight famous p.o.'s such as movie stars, sultans, princes, tycoons, etc. The car gets another lease on life due to the fame of its p.o. to some extent.
  3. Rest assured that Sahara is/was never rare! It is lurking under many Inka and Verona cars today...
  4. Rob, Mary can easily drive a stick-shift, but she's not an enthusiast. In fact, she gets carsick when I do the twistie-turnies with any gusto. She's a keeper in that she approves of my '02 addiction and the friends who go with it! (I enjoy your columns btw.)
  5. Mine is a great deal for Foreign Car Service & Mike McC.!
  6. My wife is "not into cars" so she happily drives our Taurus as a dd. She has never driven the '02. She is "allowed to" but says she would not be comfortable risking a mishap with Dieter. I was going to have my son drive it once he was proficient with a manual tranny, but he has not been very interested in driving a manual, so no BMW driving for him either.
  7. Planning has begun on a gtg at Salt Fork State Park near Cambridge, OH. (near the intersection of I - 70 & I - 77) The park consists of 22,000 acres, including a huge lodge, cabins, indoor & outdoor pools, tennis, golf, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, etc. Further details will be forthcoming. The drive will be on Sat. the 9th with a cookout to follow that evening. It will be a great chance to bring the family -- even if they're not into old BMW's. I am working on getting a group rate for us -- more later. So, get your '02 ready and join us. I would like to get a headcount, so the better you do at letting me know you're coming, the better organized we will be. Jim Denker (AKA: Jim_75Sahara) (j DOT denker AT sbcglobal DOT net)
  8. That is a long way, you are a cinch to win the longest distance travelled award! I will look for you there.
  9. A 70% survival rate for the 911 seems high to me, too. Accidents would surely eat up quite a few over time. Conversely the survival rate of Vegas, Pintos, Chevettes, Cimarrons, Escorts, etc. must be at the opposite end of the spectrum! Got a problem with your old zero-residual-value-car? --- chuck it onto the scrap heap and get a real car!!
  10. Not in the 70% range, is it? Too bad. I knew you were out there, Mike!
  11. Does anyone want to run the numbers to figure out what % of '02's are "still on the road" (i.e. viable)?? As to Gordon's remark, yes, it would vary by region, but the overall survival rate as a percentage would be fun to know. I thought the 70% figure posted by the 911 was amazing.
  12. I read in a FORTUNE magazine article that approx. 70% of all Porsche 911's built are still "on the road." I presume they mean not scrapped or rusted away, since a large number may not be on the road very much. Cars that are loved, protected, and Revered (!) would tend to have a high % surviving, right?
  13. GOOD LUCK, Ben! Hate to see your '68 that way, but I am glad that you will fix everything and keep it going strong.
  14. Have you taken a welding class? Have you pulled up the carpets to see what rot is underneath? Is the orig. color Baikal? You're right, it would be very nice if restored to original or semi-original state. Very cool for free, that's a fact. When you have it roadworthy, you need to get together with the MW '02 owners around Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, etc. There are quite a few of us. I can add you to our email list if you'd like. Mike Self of 02 Cents Worth fame lives near me. He'd be very good to know as you restore your '70 Automatic! My email is: j DOT denker AT sbcglobal DOT net. Loads of luck {and $$} as you get that 02 into shape. JIM
  15. Sahara has its appeal, but you're right, that looks fantastic in Taiga! Kudos to everyone involved. Brilliant execution of a well-conceived dream-car touring. (I'm pleased that it went from Sahara to Taiga -- not Inka -- which is cool, but it's EVERYbody's favorite.) Hope to see you and your touring one day. THE02GROUP is an amazing bunch, aren't they?? ENJOY!
  16. Michael: best wishes to you as you adjust -- and cheers to the new owner. I had the priviledge of driving the Alpina in Sept. when my wife & I flew out to Carmel to visit family. It is an extraordinary '02. (but Bacchus is mighty cool as well)
  17. I use Blizzaks on my Saturn SL-1. Its summer tires are Yokohama Avid T-4's. I keep a set of 14 in. steel wheels mounted w/the Blizzaks and a set of 15 in. alloys mounted w/the Yoko's. It makes a great winter car with proper snow tires. Also, with plastic door panels, rockers, & fenders, there is no harm done by all the slush and salt.
  18. Closer to Ohio would be good. Let me know what you have. TIA.
  19. Great work on your '02. Fascinating when such young guys love the 2002. I first drove one back in '75 -- my dad's '72 Golf '02. (I was 16 then.) You need to meet up with the rest of us Ohio '02 owners. We will be having a get-together (gtg) in May which should be fun. Even if yours isn't ready, you should join us and borrow one of ours for some fun. The May gtg will involve a cabin-camping stay at a state park and a drive. Details will follow this winter sometime. E-mail me at: j DOT denker AT sbcglobal DOT net. I will add you to our list. Good luck w/your project Jim Denker (AKA: Jim_75Sahara)
  20. haha, right you are William! The "new" brakes on my car were in ruins back in July 2003. No brake pads to speak of, a stuck caliper, oh, and a leaking wheel cylinder caused me some concern. Then I found that the front struts were no-name junk that had clearly been worn out for a decade or more! The tires had the consistency of a hockey puck. (AKA very old rubber) The balljoints were probably original to the car. I bought the car due to its being straight and nearly rust-free. I would do better spotting the flaws after 5+ yrs. of ownership. ( I hope ) ALSO: Yes, all is well here. Had a great time with the VA/NC 02'er's last weekend with 02BERFEST. Nice drive on Sat. and cookout Sat. eve. We had a very nice brunch together last Sun. am too. I won the longest distance travelled prize -- 400 miles from Kettering to Roaring Gap, NC. Great bunch of 02'er's...
  21. A group 26R battery from WalMart is hard to beat. It works very well in my '02. More CCA than the lame battery the po left me with...
  22. No offense, but there hasn't been a Sahara craze! Malaga is sometimes referred to as burgundy or wine-colored, so that's appropriate for Bacchus the god of wine.
  23. Bacchus you deserves a top-notch paint job! I want to drive Bacchus once he's all shiny and sleek. Malaga, right? You're not going to join the Inka craze, are you? Anyhow, good luck perfecting the looks of Bacchus.
  24. Like Mike_R, I bought a 75 for $3500. I immediately put a tii exhaust manifold on it. The other emission control junk was gone. Very little rust to be found. It needed brakes, struts/shocks, window seals, ball joints, tie rod ends and lots of small items, but no regrets. It already had a Weber and Hella H4's, no Recaros or 5-speed, though... For $6500, a 75 ought to be sorted out nicely IMO. I am still plugging away at deferred maintenance (PO) and old-age issues on mine, but it's been very dependable and fun to drive.
