  1. Jim, $4300 is a lot unless it's got plenty of good news to go with it. (engine rebuilt, or new paint, no rust, or all new suspension, --- something like that) You need to size up the owner: did he take care of it? is he a wingnut? is he trustworthy when he tells you it's a gem? Take an expert w/you to test-drive the '02. Look out for rust and bondo.
  2. Jim, any details? Price? Cond.? Mileage? Stock? RUST?? Wrecked?? What's broken? What's fixed/new/modified? Does it run? Does it smoke? Has it been sitting around for the past 12 years? Is the owner a FAQ'er or a crackhead? AND, where are you & where's the '02? You may be able to get expert help from somebody here on the FAQ board.... Plenty of folks are HTH. (EDIT) --- D'OH! I see the CL ad now. Some of the Q's are answered, but many are still unanswered... Good luck.
  3. Sounds like it ran smooth/no problems: satisfying when a 35 yr. old BMW works so well. I have been taking mine on trips to Cinci. and back on 741 lately. Hope you were on 2-lane backroads most of the time.
  4. For me it was in 2 stages: First, a shifter rebuild which helped, but wasn't a total cure. Secondly, a new clutch, which made a gigantic difference. No slop, no grind, but smooth through all gears.
  5. Might be too far away but Michael Dubois has a body shop in Hollister. He's well known here and has a beautiful body shop. He loves '02's, owning 2 of them himself. Great guy to know.
  6. Post the VIN of this '02; you might find a former owner that way. We all memorize VIN's here.
  7. I saw that too. Nice article. Does anyone know Jerry Hirsch or see his Ceylon '73 around LI/NYC area?
  8. We are all typing one-handed to respond to that cheesecake photo.... Send more quick.
  9. Your 02's make a wonderful tourist attraction. Even Mary (not a car person) thought that riding around in your A4 tii and Alpina tii was a fantastic time. I had so much fun driving those tii's, I'll never forget it. I loved the tour of the "Tuscan villa" your neighbor is building. That's the life, surrounded by vineyards and a hilltop villa! Michael & his wife, Laura, are great hosts, so this UK fellow was certainly shown a very fine time.
  10. OK, I'll try this out. (1) '71 Ford Maverick (2) '81 VW Rabbit S (3) '89 Toyota Corolla (4) '01 Ford Taurus wagon (5) '75 2002 That's not to mention various others my wife had: '86 Honda Civic Hatchback, '98 Saturn SL-1, and briefly, an '86 Mercury Marquis inherited from my grandfather. ooooops ---- 49 y.o.
  11. Several other people who were good to buy parts from: Sherman Martinez, Ian Pringle, and Aric Vander Werff (Asvander). I was definitely pleased with all three of them. Keep spreading good karma, guys.
  12. The movie stars Paul Newman (great car racer and all-around great guy) and Julie Andrews (love her too). There is a NK taxi which is either Schwarz or Atlantik in color which shows up several times. The flick is a cold war intrigue-type movie.
  13. Hey guys: I am flying to BR tomorrow to visit w/my brother & his wife. I will be picking up a car for my son & driving it back to Ohio. I wonder if anybody wants to meet for a beer & talk '02's?? I will be there from Tues. night through sometime on Thurs. or Fri. of this week. BTW, I plan to make a stop in Alexandria to visit some friends there as well. Lemme know if you want to have a gtg. TIA!
  14. The "average driver" in the USA is stupid, preoccupied, selfish, and overconfident. Last night I was driving on OH 741 (2-lane byway) and nobody could manage to maintain a steady pace. Slow down, speed up, wobble about, all for no reason. I passed the losers so I could have some open road. Also it appeared to be "CAR-CRUSHING TRUCK" night. Lotsa yahoos in sky-high pickups w/monstrous knobby tires. Buttwipes!!
  15. I have the std. sway bars, Bilstein HD's, H&R springs, & deleted the front spacers. Works great for me. Also it did not hurt to get new ball joints, tierod ends, center steering link, etc. New tires are next and I cannot wait to see how they improve things.
  16. Funny you should mention that... I am going to paint up 5 steelies this weekend using Krylon dull aluminum rattle can paint AFTER using some Rustoleum primer. I had the wheels sandblasted for $100 a few days ago. (Thanks to Karl H. for the wheels!) My project won't cost me a whole lot more than the $100 spent sandblasting them. (not counting the new Avid T-4's, of course.)
  17. Chris, just don't forget the soccer dads & the guys with the F250 or F350 for no logical reason. The guy that can drive a Festiva and walk proudly, well, he's got no compenstion-type issues...
  18. I did much of my early driving in a '72 Golf '02 (dad's car). It made me wonder why anyone would want to wallow about in a Buick or a Ford LTD, that's for sure. I had no accidents and learned a lot from driving the '02. My sister had a Pinto at that time and switching btwn. the '02 & the Pinto was an extreme change. Both were lightweight 4 cylinder cars, but there were not many other similarities! The Pinto's 4-speed tranny was pretty crappy as were the brakes, the handling, and the overall driving "experience"! It worked for me to drive an '02, but my son's gonna spend his time in a '93 Camry for the most part. When I feel OK with it, he gets to borrow the BMW.
  19. Ohh. Recently I had Mike McCarthy at Foreign Car Parts & Svc. (free plug!) put a new clutch in mine. It was not releasing and it was hard to shift the thing! Now it's smooth, espec. since he did a shifter rebuild on it a few years ago. I'll add you to our list of MW 02'er's then.
  20. Yup, Mike and I are going to get serious about organizing our next gtg when we work on my steel wheels tomorrow. We would be very glad to have you join us and meet the MW '02'er's. It is very good to hear that Jenna is doing well. I am always pulling for her and wishing her the best.
  21. Those on your list are very good people: & they are to be recommended. I would be surprised/shocked if somebody on this board tried to burn me, that's for sure. Never say never.... However, I assume the best until I am proven wrong. (that's not to say that I am naive and completely gullible, though!)
  22. Harv: I was out in Calif. from last Tues. through Sun. We were staying in Carmel w/Mary's aunt and uncle. Had a lovely time w/Michael Dubois & his wife, Laura. THANKS again, Michael!! I even had a great loaner car for the drive from Carmel to Hollister -- a '00 5'er w/only 42K miles on it. While in Calif. we went to Monterey, Big Sur, Santa Cruz, Big Basin State Park (for the redwood trees), etc., etc. Too bad we weren't out there at the same time.
  23. I have a brother living just east of Baton Rouge. I presume just heavy rains and some wind, but not much damage. I heard that Alexandria had 5 in. of rain the other day. I lived there from '68 through '72. In fact, I will be in BR later on this month on a visit to my brother & his wife.
  24. Monday might work. Do whatever works out best for the most.
  25. William & Jessie: I may not be able to see you all, I am working the night of the 7th, so if you hit Ohio on the early side that will help. If I don't link up w/you -- good luck with your travels! Jim
