  1. Always ask if they ship to the USA unless it is clearly stated

in poor pig-german: zum verkaufen nach amerika?

if the answer is 'ja' or 'yes', you're good.

also important to ask if they take Paypal:

in even worse german: haben sie Paypal?

paying is a big issue if they don't accept paypal. i have in the past actually exchanged dollars to euros locally and sent the currency to germany in the mail. it's a risk for sure, but i have not had a bad experience so far. i haven't bought there for a few years now as the prices with shipping can be killer and everyone is looking for the euro-only crap bargains, anyways....

bank transfers are very costly in fees.

use babelfish to translate, as well

    welcome to the 'dark side'

  2. I think I will leave the '69 unmolested and see about getting the mechanicals sorted out, restore the interior and then paint.

I'll see if I can tuck the '72 away in a corner for a second project.

    Thanks again

    Adam

Excellent choice. that is a beautiful car to keep as-is, just make sure you make it water tight.

another 6-fuse car saved for posterity.

there's a very early 1600 being parted out in the For Sale section, that is too painful to witness.

btw, those single barrel solex's have decent low-end torque as far as i'm concerned.

  3. you do realize that all projects start with one simple goal, then before you know it you'll have a laundry list of items you want to tackle while you're at it.

save up your money and hide the expenses from your wife.

by the way, there's an outfit back in maryland that sells BMW bits-n-pieces, i used them when i restored my '74 back in the nineties. i can't recall their name but maybe they'll give you a good deal on parts....

was it Bimmer Parts Company, no, that's not it, but close, ...

    it'll come to me

  4. if you were not dealing with a lot of rust on this car, i would value it more in line with $800 - $1200. these early STOCK cars are sooooo endearing to me. clean it up, get it running and don't get caught in a trap of having to replace useable trim with new and you could make it a real looker for a reasonable amount of 'elbow grease'.

save it. and leave it bone stock. they hold more value that way.

  5. Josh,

I'm going to pass on the manifold. i'noticed that the bottom water jacket cover and other fittings were removed.

but just so others know, this particular manifold was coated with Alseal 598, a high temp coating then baked at 650F for an hour. it should shine right up after a light blast with glass beads.

good luck with sale. sorry for any inconvenience

  6. i needed to see that. now i don't feel so bad. if my neighbor's give me grief for my meagre collection of 02's i can always say, relax, it could be worse.

i suppose this person is an example of a hobby gone wild....

maybe there's a lesson in this, but for the life of me i can't figure what that lesson might be...

  7. i have a black carpet-like dash cover on my dash. it came with one of my cars. i like it. i use it to keep the sun off my dash, especially if it's an uncracked dash. i've kept it from the last two cars i've passed along.

i suppose if i ever bought a new sofa, i might be one of those freaks who'd keep the cover on them. kinda like the stereotype of grama's house in the 50's.....

  8. because some of the guibos installed are buttco. they are designed to APPEAR oem, but dont meet the standards of oem. this is a problem that is on the rise, because of the weak dollar, shrinking margins, and intense competition.

    agreed.

i bought a guibo 'on sale' from azautohaus that arrived with a little paper 'made in india' sticker attached. the thing was rock hard with negligible compliance. if i ever use it, i'll make sure to inspect it regularly.

  9. Id the fan seems to be permanently fused with a brittle plastic keeper. It broke apart when attempting to remove it. I'd love input on this, as will new buyer of this item as well. Thanks

i have sucessfully removed the plastic bushing by doing the following:

ensure the shaft is cleaned with steel wool or brass bristle brush

spray a little lubricant on the area

use a SMALL gear puller to slowly pull it off

if necessary, i have also VERY CAREFULLY used a propane torch, waved quickly across the plastic to heat it up SLIGHTLY (too much and it'll ignite) followed by spray lubricant.

    i'm 3 for 3 so far.....

then i'm able to grit blast, re-cadmium plate, primer then finish paint with cast aluminum.

reinstallation, as they say, is the reverse, minus the oil and heat.

  10. [

You are first in line if he decides not to get them. Sorry about the timing, but swingshift makes things harder on all of us. If you can see about getting me back to days I will give them to you and send tom $125 for his troubles!

    what's your boss' phone number???

    i'll ask nicely....

if that fails, i'll follow through with veiled threats...

failing that, i'll sick my cousin Vinny on him...

    in the end you'll either:

    go back to day shift,

    or loose your job

    that's a 50% probability of success!!!!

  11. I have a pair of factory sidedraft manifolds and what looks like the majority of the linkage as well. The Solex's in the picture are junk but will throw them in if anyone wanted them. I'm asking $125 plus shipping. Shoot me a PM is interested and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks.

posting THIS in the wee hours of friday morning on the west coast???

aaaaarrrgh!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm crying in my morning coffee right now.....

in the unlikely event that these become available, add me to the list.

  12. chrome bumpers are essentially a fashion statement with these cars. they are jewelery and virtually ineffective at preventing damage in a collision or even a light tap.

with the cost of aluminum grills these days and the vulnerability of the front nose, one is playing 'russian roulette', when parallel parking a roundie. i avoid parallel parking at all cost.

i recently recieved my former squaretail back and plan on making it my daily driver and will be keeping the big bumpers.

  13. it's been my experience that the wires suffering the most degradation are the ones in the engine bay, specifically between the regulator and alternator as they are oil soaked and subject to grounding issues over time. additionally the wires along the firewall take a beating.

my guess is you'll use more of the red/black, green, green/blue than the others.

you may want to consider trying to locate a used harness for material before investing large amounts on rewiring from scratch.

spend more time replacing worn out/dirty connectors and solder/insulate/shrink-wrap your splices and you should be good for several more decades.

typically, i've seen that for the most part, aside from abrasion, oil, and PO splicing, and worn out terminal ends, these harnesses can be refurbished fairly easily.

i also like to use some silicone sleeves available from McMaster-Carr available in black or white to make neat OEM-looking wraps. i HATE finding that crappy plastic corregated wire sleave junk in these cars.
