  1. took it to a glass shop. 1hr later and $30 lighter, I was a happy camper. Money well spent...

that is about 45 minutes of lost time compared to what i described above.

i forgot to mention that the glycerin works by lubricating the rubber so that the LOCKSTRIP tool slides more easily within the groove, otherwise, it is apt to cut or damage the windshield gasket as described earlier.

  2. i used to have a hell of a time installing the lock strip before i used glycerin to lube the gasket first. i have the installation tool from BavAuto which is the same one sold by Lisle at NAPA.

i use the pointed end of a cheap narrow disposable wooden paint brush (1 inch wide or less) dipped in glycerin (available from your local drug store). slide the glycerin-dipped pointed end in the lockstrip groove to lube it and help seat the gasket further if necessary. it helps to ensure the lockstrip is pliable by either setting in the sun or dipping in warm/hot water first.

using this method made an unbearable job VERY easy. and as a bonus, any leftover glycerin can be rubbed on your hardened, sun bleached rubber to refresh it and it also is sold as an aid for constipation, should you find yourself needing a little assistance.

  3. [ the pedal box has some sort of wet oily fluid in it. Im guessing brake fluid... How does it get there idk is it connected to the braking pedal? I dont know much.

if you look at the brake fluid reservoir attached above the master cylinder you should see the two fluid lines going into the brake master cylinder which you've discussed above. to the side of the same brake fluid reservoir is another tube which runs along the side of your inner fender. follow your eye along its length and you will see that it ends up at what is known as the clutch master cylinder. replace this as well since you have so much fluid leaking down there. this job is made easier with another set of hands to hold the nuts still while tightening in your replacement. i've done the job solo before, though.

  4. i saw this posting for the radio after esty, armond and julio posted on the board so i figured it would probably be snatched up by one of those three persons. since i did not want to incite a bidding war by posting yet another post, i did not step in at the time. i actually emailed armond off-line to let him know i'd be interested if he should get it.

anyhow, there's been a lot of discussion on listing etiquette so i thought i'd post up my unsolicited opinion, too.

i considered the original posting a fishing exhibition by frenchee. it happens a fair bit on this board and i don't blame anyone for trying to get as much as they can for an item. it is my right to move on if the price is too high. what was not stated on esty's original post was an initial offer, which to me, is like trying to go fishing without baiting the hook. clearly, frenchee was looking for offers. he's not the only one to do this here.

if you are not going to put bait on your hook, so to speak, then you run the risk of someone else providing a monetary offer that is acceptable. if bait is provided and another offers more, then i think it is fair to allow the first-poster another shot at an offer.

yea, we run the risk of an auction, but i think the ultimate selling price on this board would most likely be in line to the true current market value for the most part.

so, in the grand scheme of things, i don't think what frenchee did was so out of line considering that no one 'baited the hook'.

  5. i got the coolest little tin lunchbox-like container with the 3-Stooges on it from my sister.

after i enjoy an evening of watching the CD of the three stooges i'm gonna use this little nifty 3-Stooges tin lunchbox to store my emergency tools in the trunk of my 02.

would it be insensitive to ask her to fill my little box with a Snap-on tool set, too?

  6. your price seems very reasonable considering all the time it takes to sandblast the subframes adequately. that in itself is alot of work.

i personally am suspect to powdercoating on items that are subject to stone chipping. powdercoating is very attractive, but i'd consider a good urethane coating a little more resistant to chips. i have toyed with the idea of using a thin coating of underbody spray on subframes to protect the finish and prevent surface rust. btw, i live near salt water.

  7. the car screams - aggression in a way reminiscent of the 80's, probably due to the blacked-out trim.

even standing still, it looks like it's moving fast...

it walks a narrow line between 'just enough' look-at-me elements and smacking you on the side of the head with a demand to look-at-me.

i'd enjoy driving it, at least for a while, but i typically prefer the sleeper look. if i were to go all out for speed i'd prefer a more sedate exterior color so as not to invite too much police attention.

  8. Does anyone have pixs where the side mirrors were painted either the body color or black?

Convert 72 tii from manual to automatic - check.

Give said 72 tii to teenage girl - check.

Put rear camera screen in tii so said teenage girl doesn't have to look behind her when backing up - check.

    Delete trim - check.

Do dash in carbon fiber - check.

    Paint mirrors - check.

What's next? Body-colored plastic bumpers? An airbag steering wheel??

Are you SURRRRRRRRE the little lady wouldn't prefer some nice little e30 to match the vert?? ;-) Heck, for the money you're putting into that resto, you could even make it an e46!

I know, I know, I'm a hater. I wasn't going to say anything, but the painted mirrors put me over the top. ;-)

okay, me too.... sorry, i wasn't gonna say anything either, but when kittens were referred to as coyote snacks in a different post, well that just killed it for me ;)

i can't wait to read about all the mods planned for 2760018

    save the kitties!

  9. thanks for the help. i am convinced that this box was likely from the 68 1600 that was given to me a couple years ago. i noticed that the PO removed the heater switch and moved the hazard switch to its location, when the dash was replaced with a one-piece.

now i'll need to find my stash of early switches. the loose wires for it are merely dangling.

looks like the original switch has four inputs. the wires get lost in the harness and emerge as just two outputs with a ground wire emerging from another nearby location.

  10. folks, i've got an identity crisis regarding which heaterbox is appropriate for my '71 6-fuse car.

i'm pretty sure that my mid-71 12-fuse car requires a heaterbox with 3-female connections and one male ground tab. i'm referring to the tabs on the upper left of the actual heaterbox.

i have a box with only 2-female connections and one male ground tab. i'm beginning to suspect that this particular heaterbox is for a VERY early 02 and may have come to me from the junkyard years ago. it's been awhile since i did a batch disassembly of my stash and now i'm having doubts as to what goes where.

i'm trying to rehab all my heaterbox requirements in one fell swoop

does anyone know for sure if the 6-fuse 71 02 uses the 3-female or 2-female terminal heaterbox

btw, i tried the search and reviewed the heaterbox writeup....

  11. Californians, I often see you excitedly point out that a vehicle for sale in your state has original blue or black plates. I get the appeal of having period appropriate plates (my car is registered with a set - I think it runs me an additional $25 or so annually). And I understand that it helps confirm that the car is original to California, a rust-light state kind to our classics.

    !

that about sums it up. i might add that there's a certain bit of exclusivity to having an 02 with its original plate and that in itself has appeal, sort of like having euro-bumperettes, italian turn signals, red tipped antennas, quick ratio steering box, snorkle-less tii and on and on....

if it ever comes to pass that we are allowed to retro-actively use 'blue or black' plates, i will be happy, but the level of cachet will diminish.

i have a photo of one of my cars sporting its original blue-plates which were surrendered to the DMV (by the PO, not me!) when a lowlife stole the backplate. I'd LOVE to be able to remake those plates and legally use them.

  12. I will probably pick up my "new" 73 tii in Hayward Saturday morning, and might be able to join you for lunch. Is it at Amici Pizzaria on Lombard Street? What time are you expecting to be there?

    Thanks

    Dieter

so dieter, looks like you went for the polaris one after all. that would have been my choice too.

too bad my lowly '71 is still on jackstands or i'd join in....
