the windshield washer pump is activated by pushing inward, towards the steering column, on the lever button, is this what you were referring to when you commented on pulling on it 100 or so times previously? these levers are unique to the 71 1/2 - 73 years as far as i know.

thanks guys for your responses. this makes sense.
this particular starter was removed from a car that sat for years. the solenoid was initially immobile. i squirted some PB Blaster in it and worked it free.
Are solenoids available separately? i know i can just buy a remanufactured starter, but there's no sport in that...

i am currently experiencing a starter motor that will not turn off. i had to frantically disconnect the (-) terminal on the battery to stop it. reconnecting the neg-terminal did not cause the starter to continue, fortunately. However, my next try with the ignition key caused the same continuous starter event.
BACKGROUND: i've been tinkering with a 12-fuse mid-71 02 for the past month trying to get it to run. i swapped in a freshly rebuilt (by me) Solex single-barrel carb (in fantastic, barely used condition i discovered). the car has the cleanest, most intact engine bay wiring harness i have ever seen on any 02. suspecting that the starter motor was a bit 'long-in-the-tooth', because it didn't turn the engine with authority, i swapped it out today with another starter i cleaned up and refreshed recently. i set the points, valves and positioned the distributer with No.1 cylinder at TDC. exchanged the fuel pump too.
Car started right up with the first turn of the key. Yey!!!!!!
I could not get the car to idle properly with the Choke closed after warmup. it would die on me.
it was after a couple tries with the ignition that the continuous starter problem arose...
i am wondering if perhaps i used too much grease in the starter armature bushing and an electrical contact is occuring?
when this event occurs, turning the ignition key to OFF and removing it does not kill the starter.
disconnecting the neg-terminal and reconnecting it does indeed turn the starter off.
the wiring in the cockpit looks good and original. hazards work, blinkers blink, fuel guage works, alternator light functions....
this particular starter is itself old, but i cleaned the commutator and gave it a general 'once-over' and tested it at Kragens. I did notice that there was an initial spark upon firing up in the test stand. i attributed that to loose metal filings or some such.
any ideas????

i have noticed a sharp increase in pricing at the picknpulls in the bay area where i used to frequent, over the last 5 years. this is to the point where many times i've just left items at the counter in disgust knowing that i can get the same item on ebay delivered to my door in a nicely wrapped box...
where the value lies is in the LSD's, recarros and 5spds, but i scoffed at the attempt to charge me $40/side for 1/2 shafts.
i've heard that the 'cashforclunker' cars have really impacted the availability of older cars due to space limitations.

i'm interested in the driveshaft if the 1st guy passes:

let's start a list of dealerships, shall we?
Mill Valley Imports (currently known as Sonnen and at new location)
Peter Pan Motors
Weber Motors
the one in berkeley who's name escapes me at the time
actually, if you have access to an old service manual i think all the dealerships of the day are listed.

i believe the 'period-correct' terminology would be naugahide.
remember when all the couches were covered in genuine naugahide back in the 70's?
they came in all kinds of great colors and looked especially good against the orange shag rug and avocado green kitchen appliances.
.....but i digress...
carry on.

very nice. where those the campy's on craigslist last summer? if so they were a good purchase.
hey...
don't you be 'dissing' malaga. malaga 'repaints' have become one of my favorite 02 colors. color-matching it typically leads to a more brick-red/fire-engine-red appearance i find VERY attractive....
nice home for the 'orphaned' bumperette.

dang....
i got the wrong half of that equation....
i'm just stupid.

gadzooks, driving through the neighborhood just to get to THAT pick-n-pull should earn anyone a bravery award. the neighborhood has gone down to the point that i refuse to drive through it anymore. i used to frequent that place everytime i visited the parents when i lived out of state. back in the 90's i was guaranteed to find a different 02 every time i visited. even saw a roundie tii once and a cool datsun 1600 roadster convertable, complete. the tii was picked over by the time i found it, btw.

If it's truly "near mint cond" and you don't strike a deal with Jerry, I'll take it:) I assuming we're talking about the later style wiper motor, right. Pics always good...

my bad alex, i assumed the original poster was accepting monetary offers so i threw one out, but your offer to accept it, conditionally, is even more appropriate to the post.
good luck....

how's $2.00 shipped to california sound?

i would imagine that a leaking trunklid problem would be exacerbated if the car had speaker holes cut in the rear shelf. furthermore, the spongy blob stuffed into the wheel arch opening should be intact. i'd consider those interior openings our 2nd line of defense.

i'd imagine the fuel filter would show fuel before the carb saw any fuel, so i can't comment on the float yet.
i'll undo the spark plugs. good idea. i was afraid to burn out my starter. it's one of those big heavy ones that are hard to wrestle out of there.

folks, i've been working on a forelorn car i saved from the scrapyard to replace the one i sold last month.
this particular car arrived with a replacement used head and dirty engine bay. the car has been sitting on jackstands for the past 2 years.
i've got everything cleaned, torqued properly, hooked up etc. put a new fuel filter ahead of the existing Pierburg fuel pump. Battery checks out at 12.2 Volts. starter spins alittle slower than i'd like but spins none-the-less.
i put about a gallon of fresh gas in the tank. so far, the gas has not been sucked into the fuel filter.
i poured a little gas down the carburetor and the engine did 'fire-off', so to speak. sounded good for a couple revolutions until the fuel source was exhausted. tried that again and quickly had to snuff out the small fire that ensued in the single-barrel solex carb.
i'm encouraged that the engine 'wants' to start-up.
am i stuck with running this starter in the hopes of the fuel pump sucking gas? at what point to i replace the fuel pump?

for a minute i thought you were offering the rims at that price.
i was all over THAT deal........
damn dyslexia....

And, correct me if I'm wrong, neither you nor jerry are potential buyers, either.
D
well, if the truth be known, i need another 02, tii or otherwise like a 'hole in the head', BUT, his very first posting did not even state the original suggestion of $3000, SOOOOOO,
i did what any other 'dreamer' would do and emailed an inquiry with some questions; answers to which appeared in his subsequent updates on CL.
at the right price, i would have MADE room. you betcha.....
-
Gee, Delia, it's not a matter of optimism or pessimism, the seller stated his price as $3000, then in his ad he said he wanted to get more than $3000 (though his ad has been deleted now) or might trade it for something else.
As I said, I've dealt with these type of sellers for cars, parts and other items in the past, and when they mention in their ads something contrary to a firm selling price, it's a red flag that indicates they probably won't be straightforward with their pricing.
The car looked and sounded like a decent car.
So I'm neither an optimist nor pessimist, but a realist based upon my experiences.
vince
you predicted this seller acurately.
new listing:
Replacement Dash--Carbon Fiber ?
in BMW 2002 and other '02
Posted
i think to comment appropriately, one would have to first know your motivation for such an item.
i'm gonna assume it's the appearance of the carbon fiber that is the appeal.
i'd guess by the time you paid for the handwork and prototyping you could have purchased a new one or had your old one recovered, but you probably knew that.
i think the shine and potential glare would get tiresome for me after awhile. carbonfiber bits used with restraint can be appealing for some.
have you considered merely applying flocking fibers to your dash if you just want to be different? a hairy dash could have some charm....
if weight savings was your motivation then removing the dash completely is more effective.
