  1. a sad day, indeed.

i hope they don't total it, but just in case, try to dig up that ebay listing of the $32K 02 that sold a month or so ago. that ought to scare some sense into the insurance company...

    good luck.

  2. what Lee said.

and i'd remove those struts from the car before going any further. you may be forced to have to try to drill the remains out and re-tapp the bore. use your favorite rust penetrant and a torch when trying to loosen the welded nuts as suggested above. may even want to soak them overnight first.

anything to try to avoid having to drill them out. at that point you may just want to look for another strut housing....

looks like you're dealing with a lot of rusty bolts down there. i bet your ball-joint nut is gonna be a challenge to remove, too.

  3. if all you are after is a template to recreate this bracket, why don't you just scale it to the proper dimensions?

this can be determined by knowing that the distance from the two mounting holes to the single rear transmission mount should equal the added length of the 5th gear section of the 5spd transmission. the holes on the existing 4spd tranny mount tabs are slotted for minor adjustment as well as this 5spd bracket so you have room to adjust as needed for slight variation.

it's a matter of ratios as to what you are measuring on the photo to the known distance from the mounting holes to the rear tranny mount that you can determine the actual values in full size.

there,.... did i make that confusing enough?

  4. well.....

that's kinda a tough one to call. however, it sounds like you are willing and able to do some or all of your own wrenching.

    if that's the case....

i'd make the trade. scratch that 'itch' while you can.

comfy seats, headers etc can all be replaced in time.

if the tii body is in better shape then the mechanical work is easier to deal with. i personally would NOT put AC into an 02. i had an 02 w/o A/C in atlanta. it did force me to change the color from Riviera to Baby Blue, though.

now, having said all this, your current car is a very good option to keep also. it sounds like you've personalized it to suit your needs and there's value in that too.

  5. there are/were two suppliers of these items who sold through ebay from time to time. the set you have pictured appears to be the ones from CPI (if i remember correctly). for the most part they are fine. occasionally i had to use a file to touch up an edge or put a small radius to keep from binding. i was using old trim so that may have added to the difficulty.

the kit from RIMSPOKE is more uniform in size and finish, but i don't think he makes the upper trim kit anymore.

either kit is a vast improvement over the Cd-plated bits from BMW. i would never use OEM fasteners if stainless steel ones are available at reasonable prices.

  6. i'm 47 already....

1)1954 international harvestor PU with 'three on a tree' (kept it for 15 years and had trouble giving it away back in 1991 long after i moved from home and parents complained.

    2) 1968 VW Bug inherited from older sister

    3) 1962 356 Porsche Type B (very brief affair, too rusty for my student life)

    4) 1978 Toyota wagon-like car (got me around for a year or so)

    5) 1974 BMW 2002 (over restored this POS and cured me of any inclination to repeat that nonsense, gave it away in 2004)

    6) 1969 Chevy 3/4 ton PU (loved that truck, left it behind in Indy)

    7) 1980's Chevy Cavalier rust bucket DD (thankfully stolen before i could replace the failing clutch)

    8) 1974 02tii (bought someone's resto/go-fast toy, sold it in Indy)

    8) 1989 Acura Legend 5spd bought used 80K miles, now at 182K, my DD

    9) 1974 Ford 3/4 ton PU (saved it from certain death, gotta have an ugly truck in my life, wish it were an automatic)

    10) 1975 02, (my $930 eBay impulse buy and the start of my addiction. i knew it was a better car than my first 02, immediately, nephew owns it now)

    11) 72 02 parts car/ 5spd RIP

    12) 71 02 bought for parts ($200) decided to keep it

    13) 71-late 02 bought it for engine and rehabbed it completely (my current fun-car)

    14) 73tii rusty crusty parts car, paid too much. hope to restore it someday

    15) 73 automatic virtually rust-free non-running formerly inka. hope to return to stock condition for my sister.

    16) 73tii rusty shell given to me by fellow FAQ'er cuz no one else would take it. i traded for the matching VIN motor. paid 3 years of back registration to save it.

    17) 68 1602 w/ SR. all i wanted was the nosepiece and fenders but owner insisted i take the whole car, free. how can i say no??? missing engine/tranny and interior - no problem

    18) 76 02 parts car RIP

    19) 75 02 given to my friend's son as his first car

    20) 72tii rust-bucket in need of TLC and $, bought it for its VIN

    21) 71-late 02 for parts, maybe

  7. i think the white-walls work very well on your car, especially since you chose to match them with the more understated steelies and hubcaps.

i think it would have conflicted with any, more contemporary rims.

now if you really want to go 'over the top' you'd have to redo the interior with red and white nauga-hyde, but i think a plain black interior is a better choice and would indeed complement your car.

  8. they show up occasionally on German eBay.

expect to pay through the nose for shipping.

be aware that there IS a difference between the 2000ti box and the 2002ti airbox, the 2000ti box being slightly longer and without the indentation necessary to clear the brake booster and the four air inlet ports are not angled like the 02ti box.

what's even harder than finding the 02ti airbox, is finding one with the correct endpieces. there's a wide range of mixmatched endpieces added to the airbox which show up for sale.

btw, i was heartened to read in another post, that you were able to get your single-barrel solex carbed car up to 100mph without effort. i need to tweak mine, i guess. mine just doesn't seem to have the snort to do quite that fast yet. not that i'd do that more than once or twice anyway.

  9. Shee- it.

Oh, well. I don't use NOS parts. Can't afford 'em...

    t

amen to that. the only NOS parts i reluctantly buy now are those that are supposed to keep the rain water out, and whatever is available at AZ Autohaus...

i used to be able to buy on eBay, but i am CONSISTENTLY outbid by the same person, over and over again....

    why even try anymore?

  10. btw, we did BBQ about 60 oysters from tomales bay last saturday, yum!!!

I think you're all right on with this line of thinking. Bring beers and tools, turn a wrench and flip a burger.

    Oysters are nice too.

Why aren't the Bay Area gatherings of this nature? take more advantage of more than a parking lot. Tamalpias could be a good rogue event location.

I'll be working on and around my 02 tomorrow (sunday) helping my nephew and another guy rebuild heater boxes. anyone else want to turn wrenches and enjoy a day on the shoreline come on by. could have an impromptu BBQ as the grocery store is not too far away.

BTW, i'm located near the the midpoint of the areal photo shown above on the rightmost shoreline. my email is posted earlier.

newtothe02, bring your car, spark plugs, condenser, points and ambition.

no rock work tomorrow due to a mishap with one of the helpers. those things are big, heavy and very dangerous....

  11. Well it looks like we might need to have a tuneup party/bbq I'll cook if you guys help me fix a few things. Might need a little donation also for a few pieces of meat and or vegetables. BYOB right? Can we make this a Bay Area 02 event? .

an 02 gathering on my beach is one of those items i'd like to do before i die, sort-of-thing...

there's a couple folks from the board who can vouch for me when i say it could probably accomodate around 15-20 02's

if only i could get the necessary permits to complete my workshop i could clean up the shit-hole and make it halfway presentable. until then i suppose i'll just keep stacking my rock wall.

btw, we did BBQ about 60 oysters from tomales bay last saturday, yum!!!

  12. i'll bite...

    pun intended.

i'm in marin and working on my beach every weekend (where my tools are). i've got the requisite tools and most importantly, a ready BBQ and a killer location.

i may even ask you to lend a hand in moving a rock or two with me and my helpers.

i was planning on tuning my 02 up as well.

  13. this is a great start. i've been suggesting such kits to the few vendors who frequent this board for awhile. there are several such kits that would be useful.

if not assembling the kit, then perhaps an FAQ listing of kit P/N's is in order.

don't keep us guessing. post up the price.

kitting of parts is a trend in the aeroengine overhaul business, too.

  14. contentment is a higher gift. glad you are able to recognize it and embrace it. i too enjoy the holy begeezus out of my poorly painted single-barrel solex run-of-the-mill 02 like no other.

more important than horsepower i think is good mechanicals that work as they were intended. it's all the little things as discussed in another thread. perhaps you may have saved someone from an impulse buy....
