starter motor is below the intake manifold and attached to the engine block with two bolts.
there is a nice writeup on the XR-3000 that should give you the info you need. find it on the 02FAQ section listed in the top banner

i'm finally getting to the point where i can reinstall the interior stuff back into my car. many moons ago when i removed bits and pieces i considered their correct replacement so obvious to the most casual observer that i deemed it beneath me to make notes.
well, you know the rest. many moons and volumes of paint thinner, mineral spirits etc., have taken their toll on whatever brain cells survived my misguided youth. with the addition of other cars into the herd i'm not so sure now.
questions:
1. seat belts are the retractable type similar in style to the square tails, right?
2. if the rear quarter panels have a 1/2 inch hole near the B-pillar, it is an attachment point for the earlier style seatbelts and technically, these panels should be saved for an earlier car, right?
3. the proper grab handles for the back-seat passengers is NOT the vinyl loop dangling from the B-pillar but rather the hard plastic grab bar similar to the squaretails?
4. all-chrome rear quarter window latches were only on the 6-fuse cars? mid-71 versions were chrome with plastic knobs, right? squaretails switched to all black?
thanks in advance.

well, it took a lot more time than i had planned but my carpet is installed and i'm one happy person. i worked very hard to get this carpet to look right. it was an eBay special and the form and fit was nothing like the old Bimmer Parts Company carpet kit. oh how i miss those kits. i installed one of those kits many years ago and i don't recall having this much effort to make it look good. anyhow, the work paid off because i'm pleased with the final look. i had to do quite a bit of fitting but the job is behind me and i'll know better for the next time.
now, if only i can find my darn seatbelts i'd have the rear seat installed.... i placed the rear seat back and driver's side in the car just to have a look-see. i'm desperately trying to finish in time for the palo alto show.
i still have the engine to install and hook up all the lights and other misc.

a couple of photos to show some movement on this car. i rehabbed the dash. it surely could be better but it's a vast improvement over what it used to look like. i swapped out the bottom piece for one i picked up cheap on eBay awhile ago. no one else bid on it because it was cut out where the console is. to my good fortune, it is not visible at all and the dash was virtually crack free. a well-spent $30 i'd say. spent a couple evening recently rewrapping the harness and cleaning the fusebox.
i'm hoping to install the front windshield soon. i noticed a small tear in my otherwise nice headliner but i will have to live with it for now. i figure i can always remove the windows again someday to replace it.

Man, that is so painful to look at.
all i know is that i want it.
i DON'T know WHY i want it. i just want it all. every piece of that stuff.
if you ever got it sorted out it looks like you'd have 'death on wheels'
showing us all that stuff is like handing an issue of Playboy to a lifer in prison.
besides the price tag, educate me on why i shouldn't want all those goodies.

wow brian, i'm very happy for you. i'm gonna get up early tomorrow and hit my car hard. i'll do my best to finish in time. can't wait to see it in person. that paint job looks great. it helps when you have someone who knows what they're doing.

i'm busting my butt brian. i REALLY want to make it in my own car. i'm gonna install the engine/tranny this weekend. tomorrow will be the carpet install; sunday the engine/tranny. i just got through wrapping the wiring harness on the white one before the mosquitoes nearly picked me up and carried me away to their den. this past rain really brought those bastards out.

i believe that marketing ad campaign started with the 320i series.
and, incidentally, the original photo and TV commercials were filmed on Bolinas Ridge on Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County. Many car commercials have been filmed there since, but to my knowledge BMW was the first.
i recall reading an article on that location and the BMW ad, in the Wall Street Journal years ago.

Hey gang-
I made a new user ID, too many people apparently thought my name was bob (boberl15).
yea, i too thought your name was bobby-earl and i envisioned you having buck teeth and a 7th grade education.
i'm kidding, duhhhhh

that is classic H-Krix!!!
kinda like my shit-hole mess, only my floor slopes and the roof leaks and a couple windows are broken, but hey, it's home away from home.
i agree with sharpie and ziplock bags and plastic storage boxes

factory service manual for around 100 bucks plus or minus: ebay (typically)
factory service manual for cheap: at the base of a rainbow (typically)

if they're still available i'd like to buy the pair of transmission mount brackets on the tunnel.

Yeah, I thought about gloss black but i dunno. I'm thinking maybe florida to cover up the flaws that are going to be in the body work.
HEY, HEY, i just voted and according to your initial posting you gotta go with majority rules. it's only fair. after all, it means so much to me.

i ask because it is not currently level so filling up to the fill hole may not be a good idea.

I remember you Blue. What did you do with that 20 dollar headers? Good score on those rims by the way.
They're still in my garage, waiting patiently to be put on. All the nuts are rusted to the studs on my head right now, but since I'm going to get the head rebuilt soon anyway, I'm just going to wait until it comes out to deal with it.
THAT WAS YOU??? i didn't realize those wheels ended up in my backyard (mill valley).
if i didn't live so close to the salt water i MAY have purchased those magnesium wheels, i was just thinking i spent a fair bit of change buying those NOS tii struts, M/C, rotors, calipers AND the PERFECT set of 69 blue seats. (all that stuff is destined for the tii shell i got of ibjettin, someday).
you got a great deal on those wheels. they were nice. me, i decided to use the OEM slotted rims for my ti-clone. don't know if i'll paint them black, dark grey or white.
since you are so close stop by some time.

look here for good photo documentation:

btw, non-sunroof cars have the narrow hardboard at the rear window.
starting from the rear windshield you'll be pulling the headliner forward to get it tight. pulling the rods forward helped tighten the headliner.
it's not rocket science, just allow yourself time.

very nice work mitch. and this proves that one doesn't need to outspend their peers to obtain nice results. this should be copied to the FAQ construction zone.

They are NOS. I got lucky and bought the pair from craigslist. I stole it for 100 bucks in a bag w/ orange stickers.
yea, and i stood helplessly by as i fronted you the 100 clams to buy those babies.
if you haven't destroyed your used set would you mind throwing them my way. i might consider them good enough for my white car. you know me.

Good quality parts, too...no unknown brands made in a country you've never heard of stuff either.
mike
not entirely accurate. on the whole, i like them too, but i was disappointed at receiving a POS guibo made from what looked like hardened recycled rubber from used tires with a very primative "made in india" stamp on it. i still have it somewhere. i wouldn't install that brittle-looking POS.
other than that one incident they've been competitively priced.

i actually thought that was/is a very nice car. i'd take dents over rust any day. i love the original blue plates too. this one, i hope, remains in california just for those plates. actually, if it were my one and only, i'd offer the reserve and hope for the best if it were close by.

sorry, that doesn't get any sympathy from me. hammer it out as best as possible using appropriate techniques described in detail at various DIY paint sites on the internet.
by the time you've messed with bondo and sanded it and bondoed and sanded it and bondoed and sanded it and.......
you should have attained the necessary skills to tackle a similar problem much faster the next time. i speak with prior experience and frustration.
good luck and we all praise the salvation of a woe-begotten 02.

i am SOOOOO jealous of your garage shown in the background. i'd kill for that amount of FLAT, LEVEL, covered space.
anyhow, with the speed you finished your other project, you should be just about done with this one in time for palo alto next month. have fun with it. glad to see another orphan find a worthy home.

i agree. i just wasn't as straightforward in saying so. i had one of those air canisters sandblasted and painted with leftover grey urethane used on T56/RR427 Gearboxes (used on C130's). can't wait to install it and it still looks wet weeks later.
interior trim question: late-71 model year

thanks for the info.
just a follow-up. is your car (2572581) a 6-fuse or 12-fuse?
i know that 2572181 (RIP) was a 6-fuse. reason i ask is whether the seat belts changed at that point too.
otherwise, i'm gonna be looking for the chrome bar that bolts to the transmission tunnel and my set of Klippan (sp?) seat belts in my pile-o-parts. my car VIN 2576240 is 12-fuse.
