Found! The BMW 1502 Lumma Convertible from DC!

Big news tonight, folks. Remember this car?

This is a 1976 BMW 1502 Lumma Conversion Convertible. You may recall that it was seen in Washington DC, and posted in BMW 2002 FAQ on 8/14/2011. It was originally from mye28.com, apparently.

Rather a sad-looking example of an extremely rare car, isn't it? But..... how many Lummas are there in the world?

As you can see in the comment at the end of that post, I was contacted this afternoon by a fella in MA who purchased this car last June, and has since done considerable work to bring it back to life!

I will add more info as I communicate further with him. He will be sending along some pics in the next week or two. We really look forward to hearing and seeing more of this very rare example!

That's the only two I have seen in the five or so years I have been a 2002 fiend.

I have to defer to the wiser, more experienced members in here on that. You probably know that the general rule is: when the top goes down, the price goes up.

As far as the question of how many Lummas are in the US..... I have reports of a red one in MA; another red one in VA; a yellow one in Texas; and another possible (although not definite) red one in Palo Alto Ca.

02Les has VINs of two that I am aware of. Any others?

Anyone else have any Lumma sightings..... or even a vague rumor? All are welcome at this point! You never know what they may pan out to be!

There was a green one in the PNW a couple/few of years ago. sold on Ebay. when I bought mine, I got them both from the same importer in CA. He imported a lot of minis as well.

Lumma was an aftermarket company that refitted later 02 style bodies with convertible tops. I had one and a real Baur at the same time. I drove the stuff out of the Lumma and left the Baur at home. The yellow tii Lumma came from the same guy mine did in CA. He is/was a Dutch guy that also owned? an inline skate company. Henk something or other. My/Mike's/Bob's touring was also imported through him.

That's so weird. I saw that `76 parked on the street in DC years ago and again after it had been rear-ended. I thought, "Oh, no. Someone cut the top of of a 2002."

I had no idea that it was rare or valuable. I just thought that someone ruined a 2002!

That is great info. So it looks like we have reports of 4 Lummas so far; your red one; the red 1502 now in MA; the yellow tii thought to be in Texas (Katy, TX?) and a green one in PNW. Any other sighting reports/ scurrilous rumors/or even Lumma hallucinations?

Does anyone have any further info on the Dutch (?) guy that AndyS refers to here? Henk, or similar. Any info, no matter how seemingly unimportant or trivial, can be helpful here. One clue leads to another.... etc etc. All info is welcome!

Vs the Baur its lower and has fixed triangle windows due to the changed windshield angle.

Not a great example, but I think you can see the different rake of the windshield.

I had a co-op job with General Dynamics Space Systems in San Diego in 1989, and I lived in Pacific Beach for the 9 months of the co-op session. I recall frequently seeing a golf yellow chop top 2002 parked on Garnet Ave. At the time I remember thinking that it must have been a custom job, and "holy Shazam that's a sweet looking car."
