History of the RS 2002

The chassis was built in 1973 by Quality Car Service of Rockford MD, Terry Luxford over saw the construction. His #91 BMW won the IMSA championship in 1972 with Earl Fellin driving. Think it was races a few times in 1974 by Gerry Tanner as the number #15.

Road Atlanta -April, Mid Ohio – June, Lime Rock – Sept,Daytona – Nov

Cliff Rickmers bought the chassis in Feb. 1975. The number was changed to #14 (because of Al Holbert and AJ Foyt’s success with the number) and painted orange with yellow and blue stripes. He lived in Canton Ohio at that time and ran several SCCA Regionals at Nelson Ledges in B Sedan with BFG Street tires, usually won. The car ran IMSA as a 1600. Road Atlanta – April,Mid Ohio – June, Mid America Raceway – July, Daytona –

1976 - The car was sponsored by Chemflex Corp. the distributor of Flex Oil as #14. Color changed to white and black with oranges/yellow highlights. Raced at;

Road Atlanta, Mid Ohio, Lime Rock, Mid Ohio – Two races there that year

Fall of 1976 - He changed jobs and moved to Tennessee with BMW, engine dyno, flow bench and parts in the moving van.

1977 - Rickmers built a shop and started construction of the ’74 chassis. Raced the old #14 (Bill Kemper's) at Atlanta, Talladega and maybe Hallett

1978- 1980 Rickmers & Crider campaigned the ’74 with #14. It was the first of the cars in the motor sport colors, the chassis Kemper has was to painted to match later. I think Donnie (Crider) took the old car (Kemper's) to drivers school at Hallett OK and Road Atlanta in ’79.

Then moved to Tupelo MS in 1979.

1980- The ’74 car landed on it’s roof at Atlanta in Sept. Rolled it back over and started and finished the race. Donnie was driving. I sold the ’74, the engine dyno, and shop equipment and gave Donnie the old car and parts.

1981 – Kemper car ran in April at Atlanta with #19, Mid Ohio with #4 and in the fall at Atlanta #44. Donnie was at the wheel. It qualified second at Mid Ohio.

1982- The car only raced at Atlanta in April, it blew the engine at about the half way point in the 3hr race while running second. Donnie and I were co-driving. That engine (at least the bottom end), remains in the car.

Engine in the car

The engine has either a Schrick 336 or a Schrick 320 cam, the head is probably a tricked out head from a 1600 or the more common 121ti head. The engine was over bored to the IMSA limit ( .010 over.) The pistons were bought as blanks from Mahle and machined for the head. The engine had the Holley 500 cfm carb on what was called a "turbo manifold". That particular motor was not dyno’ed before Atlanta but similar configurations were making 190hp to 205hp at 7700 rpms...The engine will need a rebuild or use the spare'72 tii(ti) engine with the Weber 48 DCOEs

This is a complete race car and it is an excellent candidate for a restoration. Very few of these original BMW IMSA RS (especially 2002s!) cars remain. This car is offered at $9750. If interested, please contact Bill by either e-mail, blackforestmotors@sbcglobal.net or at 314/ 704-8560
