Emission Diagram Under Hood Stickers

Recommended Posts

I have seen pictures of the under hood Emission Diagrams stickers for the 1976 California Version (Color) and the 49 State B/W Version (Smog Pump, no EGR), but have never seen pictures of the stickers based on the diagrams on the DAG website for the 74 (EGR Only, No Smog Pump) and 75 (looks like the CA 76 Version but marked "75").  How many versions of the under hood emission diagram stickers were produced beyond the 2 I have seen (76 CA and 49 State)?  If there are under hood emission diagram stickers for 74 and 75 models, or older, does anyone have pictures of them?

Thanks,

I'm guessing, Mark, that there were three '76 stickers, based largely on the fact that the 49-state version includes both manual and automatic transmissions, but the CA-only version shown appears to cover solely manual transmissions, implying a third sticker for CA-only automatic transmissions.

Then I'd guess one or two '75 stickers, dependent on whether there are separate versions for manual and automatic transmissions. And the '75 sticker, or stickers if manual and automatic transmission versions exist, should be almost identical to the '76 CA-version sticker with the exception of the year and transmission.

As to '74, I just scanned eBay and saw a Chamonix '74. It appears to have a schematic label "2002 US 1974" but I can't see enough of the sticker to comment further. Since I couldn't see "automatic" or "manual", does that indicate there was only one sticker version?

Where does that leave us, at least five or six different stickers? No wonder no one has repro'd them!

Regards,

Steve

This is from my '74 automatic. The car was first sold in CA but I don't know if the CA cars were different from the other 49 state cars that year.

Edit with information from the BMW archive:

The BMW 2002 Automatic US VIN 4283264 was manufactured on June 27th, 1974 and
delivered on July 01st, 1974 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New
York City. The original colour was Polaris metallic, paint code 060.

Also, according to my records, the Pre-delivery check was carried out on 1/10/75 by Hyde Park Motors in LA, CA with 48 miles on the odometer.

Great!

The CA-only '02 version only appeared with the '76 model year.

Mark,

I've never seen or heard of a CA-only or 49-state version of the '75 model.

My understanding is that the new E21 head -- developed for the e21 series of cars that commenced production around May '75 (Euro version only) -- turned out to be "cleaner-burning" than the E12 head, lowering emissions sufficiently that '76 models could meet the Federal EPA standards without the thermal reactor exhaust manifold. But...California's emissions standards were, predictably, higher than the Federal standards, and couldn't tolerate elimination of the thermal reactor, so the CA-only '76 is identical to any U.S. '75 model.

If you've seen schematics for '75 models that distinguish CA models from others, let's get them posted here (the original post only showed two stickers, both '76). I simply didn't know they exist.

Regards,

Steve

Steve:

I have never seen a 1976 emission sticker that designated CA only, just US ones for 1976 that were in color, had smog pump, thermal reactor, and EGR.  The 75 manual transmission emission sticker is identical to the 76 manual transmission sticker in appearance and is marked as a 1975, (I have one on my car).  So if your statements above are correct (which I am sure they are).  Everyone in 1975 got the same US emission sticker and in 76 with the cleaner burning head, only cars shipped to CA got the 76 US color sticker with the smog pump, thermal reactor, and EGR and the rest of the country got the 1976 49 State black & white sticker.  So my list should be modified as follows.

Under Hood Emission Diagram Stickers

Exhaust Emission Control System (2002 US 74 - Auto & Manual Transmission) - Confirmed

Exhaust Emission Control System BMW 121.8 (1975 US Version Manual Transmission) - Confirmed

Exhaust Emission Control System BMW 121.8 (1975 US Version Auto Transmission) - ?

Exhaust Emission Control System BMW 121.8 (1976 US Version Manual Transmission) - Confirmed

Exhaust Emission Control System BMW 121.8 (1976 US Version Auto Transmission) - ?

Exhaust Emission Control System BMW 121.9 (1976 49 State Version Auto/Manual Transmission) - Confirmed

We still need to verify that 75 & 76 Automatic Transmission equipped cars had their own unique stickers.

Thanks,

Yes, Mark,

Agreed on all accounts: the stickers on '76 CA-only cars do not say "CA-only". Only the '76 49-state versions are identified with the special designation: "49-state". And I'm also just guessing that there is separate version for the automatics because the '76 CA-only (aka, U.S. version) sticker you show says "manual". So it will be interesting to see what turns up!

Thanks for taking on this project!

Best regards,

Steve

Thanks, Mark,

You know they "cheaped out" on the '76 49-state sticker because they KNEW it was the end of the run! And they couldn't simply run more copies of the prior year's, with a "5" changed to "6"!

Boy oh boy, if I owned an automatic trans square taillight, I would REALLY want to get into the fun by posting a photo of my car's sticker in this thread....

Big rims are nice, but we're talking about emissions here!

Help us out!

Steve:

They probably also "cheaped out" on the "automatic version" of the 75 and 76 stickers and put manual stickers on those cars because the smog setup was exactly the same.  Their cheapness was probably the reason the 49 State stickers were printed black & white.

I was a bit fearful of this: additional data!

I took a look at the photo from the following listing that shows the emissions schematic:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/121759975873?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The car is a '74 automatic, VIN 4282013. Unfortunately, for the simplicity of this analysis, the sticker is different from Peter's '74 automatic. It is obviously earlier than Peter's car, but still a '74 model. And though you cannot see the entire sticker, there is a prominent red line in the eBay car's sticker which is not present on Peter's car's sticker. But both stickers use the same identifier: "2002 US 74". Mid-model year change? That's all I can come up with!

Regards,

Steve

Steve, after looking at the pictures, I think I know why they look different. My label has a faint line where the red line once was. I bet it once had the red lines but has faded or worn off. The index in the lower right should have a red line next to control valve. If you look closely, the faint line follows the red line on the other two labels from the '76's.
